SUMMARY:Guns to Gardens Gun Buyback
DESCRIPTION:This year the innovative Guns to Gardens gun buyback will again be at Mt. Zion Baptist Church\, 1203 Willow St.\, Oakland. It will be from noon til 4PM Saturday November 15. This innovative program\, sponsored by Mt. Zion Baptist Church\, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, Oakland\, many other faith leaders\, and supported by the Oakland Police Department\, is centered in Isiah 2:4 “and they shall forge their swords into plowshares” so the guns that are turned in are forged into garden tools. Each person turning in a gun will receive a gift card (up to $300) and a garden tool forged from a gun that was turned in at last year’s Guns to Gardens event. \nThis year Guns to Gardens is not asking for contributions because we had funds left over from last year. Instead we are asking: Please help us get the word out! Having a gun in the home increases the risk of death from homicide\, suicide\, and unintentional shootings\, affecting all members of the household\, including children. Studies show a significantly higher rate of violent deaths\, particularly suicides and homicides\, for people living in homes with firearms compared to those in gun-free homes. Additionally\, guns in the home are prime targets for thieves\, who can then use them for crimes. Please help us encourage all to get any guns out of their homes and the homes of their neighbors and friends\, and bring them to the Mt. Zion parking lot on Nov. 15 knowing that they will be forged into garden tools\, and get a gift card and a garden tool that was forged from a gun. Please post the flyer on your social media\, in newsletters\, and also we can deliver copies to you for you to post everywhere!

SUMMARY:Bay Get Ready Noncooperation Training
DESCRIPTION:Faith in Action East Bay has been working with the many organizations that make up the Bay Resistance network to strategize about how to defeat the growing threat of authoritarianism and the attacks on our communities.  We are learning lessons from the history of liberation movements that have defeated authoritarian takeovers across the world. We all need to get trained up on noncooperation and develop movement strategy together. \nWe are also preparing for the threat of federal invasion to sanctuary cities in the Bay Area by scenario planning and organizing our neighborhoods to be ready. We know it is up to us to protect one another. \nWe are inviting people across the Bay to come together on Sunday October 5th for a mass meeting and training. \n\n\nDevelop noncooperation civil resistance strategies \n\n\nBuild on-the-ground skills for neighborhood solidarity \n\n\nKnow your rights and ways to stay safe during military deployment \n\n\nOrganize a mass movement against authoritarianism \n\n\nRegister in advance to save your spot and indicate if you need child care\, interpretation\, or support to access the space in any other way.

SUMMARY:CityCamp Oakland
DESCRIPTION:CityCamp Oakland is a one-day unconference — a participant-driven gathering where anyone can propose\, lead\, or join sessions about the issues and opportunities shaping life in Oakland. Instead of a pre-set agenda\, the day starts with an empty schedule (“The Wall”) and a room full of people ready to share ideas\, skills\, and solutions. \nWhether you care about public transit\, housing\, parks\, education\, open data\, community safety\, climate resilience\, or local arts — if it touches public life in Oakland\, it belongs here. Sessions might be discussions\, hands-on workshops\, demos\, or collaborative problem-solving labs. \nExpect to connect with a diverse mix of neighbors\, civic leaders\, technologists\, advocates\, designers\, policy wonks\, educators\, and curious residents. Bring your ideas\, your expertise\, or just your curiosity — everyone is welcome\, and no experience is required. \nCityCamp Oakland is more than a conference. It’s a space for real conversations\, cross-community connections\, and collective action. Come ready to listen\, share\, and shape Oakland’s future together. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Apache Stronghold: Defend Oak Flats
DESCRIPTION:A Call to Defend the Holy: Oak Flat\n4-6 p.m. Sunday\, September 7\nPresbyterian Church of Oakland\n2619 Broadway\, Oakland \nFor the past 11 years\, the San Carlos Apache have fought to protect and save their sacred land\, Oak Flat\, which is about 2 hours outside of Phoenix\, Arizona. In 2014\, Sen. McCain added a rider to a defense bill that began the possibility of the sale of Oak Flat to a multi-national copper mining company\, Resolution Copper. This company would mine Oak Flat’s copper deposit resulting in a 1-mile crater where the sacred ground presently stands\, as well as ground water contamination\, air pollutants and destruction of the surrounding wildlife. Oak Flat would be destroyed entirely by copper mining. There are many aspects of religious significance of Oak Flat for the Apache\, but one of the primary ones is it is the site for the sunrise ceremonies or coming of age ritual for young girls. It is considered the holiest site for the Apache people\, having a similar significance to Jews and Christians of Mount Sinai. \nThe Apache Stronghold\, founded by Wendsler Nosie\, Sr.\, is the organizing body leading the fight to save Oak Flat through a spiritual battle that is also using legal means\, and political education. The Apache Stronghold is in coalition with over 200 other Native American tribes\, dozens of denominations and national faith bodies\, and thousands of spiritual leaders across the United States (and world). At present there is a temporary injunction halting the land sale until the 9th Circuit Court can hear the case regarding religious freedom. \nConcept: \nOak Flat represents many interconnected issues woven clearly into a battle against evil. It is about land occupation and environmental devastation. It is tied directly to the battles we see for our common humanity where companies and capital come first\, and immigrants\, unhoused people\, indigenous communities\, Black and brown communities and poor communities are disposable. It is also about the fight for a sacred place where women lead and come into a ritual affirming the divine feminine. This is why the communities fighting to save Oak Flat include religious people of all faiths\, immigrants\, survivors of Japanese internment camps and other communities facing displacement\, environmentalists\, and many others. \nOak Flat is a call to defend the holy. With the divisions and inaction present amongst religious progressives\, the struggle to defend Oak Flat could be the path to a deeper spiritual education\, seeding a vision and a network for interfaith movement committed to a radical multicultural pro-democracy movement\, as well as a place of grief and lament for all that truly has been lost to us. It could help build movement and resurgence of energy for the many issues and places where people are occupied and isolated right now. \nCome listen to Dr. Wendsler Nosie\, Sr.\, founder of Apache Stronghold at 4-6 p.m.\, September 7\, at First Presbyterian Church\, 2619 Broadway\, Oakland. \nINFO: Rev.
