Join a conversation on what it means to reimagine the Beloved Community for the nation in this new era. Rev. Adam Russell Taylor\, president of Sojourners and author of A More Perfect Union: A New Vision for Building the Beloved Community\, will lead a panel of local faith leaders: Rev. Leslie Takahashi\, Pastor Michael Wallace\, Rabbi Julie Saxe-Taller. \nBIOS \nRev. Adam Russell Taylor is president of Sojourners and author of A More Perfect Union: A New Vision for Building the Beloved Community. Taylor previously led the Faith Initiative at the World Bank Group\, served as the vice president in charge of Advocacy at World Vision U.S.\, and co-founded Global Justice. He was selected for the 2009/2010 class of White House Fellows. Taylor is a graduate of Emory University\, the Harvard U. Kennedy School of Government\, and the Proctor School of Theology. Taylor is on the Independent Sector Board and serves in ministry at the Alfred Street Baptist Church. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nLeslie Takahashi serves as lead minister at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church in Walnut Creek\, CA and has served as faculty at both the Unitarian Unviersalist theological schools. She has led within Unitarian Universalism in the areas of anti-oppression\, justice and trauma integration. Prior to entering the ministry\, she worked professionally in the area of leadership development\, sustainable economic development and education policy and was the Assistant Vice President for Policy for the North Carolina Community College System. She is the co-author\, with Chip Roush and Leon Spencer\, of The Arc of The Universe is Long: Anti-racism and the Unitarian Universalist Association (Skinner House 2008)and a contributor to a number of professional publications and meditation collections. Her children\, Garner and Liam–and now grandson\, OT\, offer on-going inspiration. \n  \n  \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ \nRabbi Julie Saxe-Taller is the Lead Organizer for the California Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC-CA)\, where she builds the network of congregations who are harnessing their statewide voice for justice as Jews. Previously\, she served Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco from 2004 to 2017. Rabbi Saxe-Taller is passionate about bringing the spiritual\, creative and justice-seeking elements of Judaism together\, as they are meant to be. \n~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\nPastor Michael Wallace is the Board Co-Chair and Faith in Action East Bay and Senior Pastor-Teacher at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.\n  \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Demonstration at St. Rita Jail: Care Not Deaths
DESCRIPTION:We are demonstrating for Care Not Deaths to stop the deaths at Santa Rita Jail – including four more lives lost in January and February this year. \nPlease join us in a protest to stand with the Care First\, Jails Last Community Coalition on April 1\, at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin (5325 Broder Blvd)\, starting at 1:00 pm. \nPlease complete the form (linked here and below) to get specific information about exactly where to meet\, and what we’ll be doing. We will send those details to everyone who responds to the poll. \nSince the Board of Supervisors’ passage of the Care First\, Jails Last Resolution in 2021\, we’ve been building power to end the county’s reliance on the criminal legal system to meet the needs of residents with mental health and substance use needs. Collectively\, we do this by advocating for divestment from Alameda County’s criminal legal apparatus and reinvestment of this money into an upstream\, community-based\, life-affirming continuum of care.  We don’t want to see individuals’ crises addressed inside the county jail. \nYet in just the first two months of 2023\, under the care of the newly elected Sheriff\, four people incarcerated at Santa Rita Jail lost their lives: Stephen Lofton on January 17; Elizabeth Laurel on February 13; Charles Johnson on February 4; and Candice “Cody” Van Buren on February 28. Cody Van Buren’s death is at least the 66th in Santa Rita Jail since 2014\, according to KTVU. Seven other people at Santa Rita experienced fentanyl overdoses in February. \nAt this moment\, Alameda County is going from bad to worse\, and we are raising our voices next Saturday\, April 1st.  While 48% of the county’s discretionary budget is allocated to the Sheriff’s office in the name of “public safety\,” our communities are becoming increasingly more unsafe due to the widening of criminalization nets\, a lack of deeply affordable housing\, and an underfunding of upstream\, community-based\, and voluntary mental and behavioral health services. The most vulnerable among us are Black\, Brown and Indigenous peoples\, our unhoused neighbors\, and those experiencing serious mental illness. There is no justifiable reason for the continued overfunding of the county’s carceral institutions when these resources are being used to deepen racial disparities and destabilize our care systems. It is abundantly clear: jails do not make us safer.
