SUMMARY:Another Jail Death Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Yet another in-custody death has taken place at the hands of Santa Rita Jail.\n\n\nOn May 17th\, Jose “Nick” Piña was taken into Santa Rita Jail custody\, that very same date shortly after arriving at the jail\, deputies used force and restraints on Nick — within just hours of arriving at the jail Nick was transported to the hospital and later pronounced deceased on June 7th.\n\n\nNick’s mom\, Lydia\, was never told that her son was at the hospital and only learned 9 days after he had already been hospitalized. To date\, she has received no information from ACSO regarding what happened to her son. We are also very concerned that the jail is not considering this an in-custody death.\n\n\nThis is now at least the 59th in custody death that we are aware of since 2014\, and at least the 2nd one that has taken place since the controversial ‘consent decree’ went into effect.\n\n\nPlease join Lydia and other impacted families for a community vigil and action in front of the sheriff’s office tomorrow \, Wed 6/22 @ 4p.m

SUMMARY:Guns to Gardens ~ Gun Buyback
DESCRIPTION:Across the country guns are being forged into garden tools as in Isaiah 2:4: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares.” This movement is coming to Oakland on June 11\, 2022. \nGuns to Gardens is a gun buyback program in which guns are forged into garden tools. Inspired by Isaiah 2:4 — “And they shall beat their swords into plowshares” — the program takes inspiration from RAWTools and successful Guns to Gardens programs across the country. \nPaula Hawthorn\, an organizer of the program\, first learned of Michael Martin and the Guns to Gardens initiative while listening to a podcast produced by her Episcopalian church. She had already been a regular walker in the Friday Ceasefire Night Walks and a volunteer with the Brady Campaign in gun-tracing work. She brought the idea of a Guns to Gardens program to OPD. \nHawthorn\, a 78 year-old retired software engineer and grandmother of five\, felt compelled to become involved after three children were killed by gun violence in Oakland in 2011. “I do this work because God tells me\,” she said. \nWith the training from RAWtools leaders\, local Oakland blacksmith John Rogers and assistants will take guns that the Oakland Police Department has determined should be destroyed and will forge them into garden tools. Then on June 11\, with the assistance of OPD at the church At Thy Word in East Oakland\, the first 50 people turning in their guns at this event will receive one of these garden tools in addition to gift cards. The guns collected at the event will also be forged into garden tools. \nEvent sponsors are: Faith in Action East Bay\, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, the Violence Prevention Coalition\, At Thy Word Ministries Church of God in Christ\, Make Oakland Better Now!\, Brady United and the Oakland Police Department. \nDonations are being accepted for the cost of forging the guns into tools\, and purchasing gift cards. \nTo donate\, please make the check out to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church\, with the notation that it is for the Guns to Gardens event\, and please send it to the following address. St. Paul’s EIN is 94-1243684.  If you want to donate electronically\, rather than by check\, please go to St. Paul’s Guns to Gardens click “add gift to another fund” and scroll down to Guns to Gardens. For checks\, please send to: \nRev. Mauricio Wilson\, Guns to Gardens\nSt. Paul’s Episcopal Church\n114 Montecito Ave.\nOakland. CA 94610 \n  \n

SUMMARY:AC BOS Meeting: Sheriff Oversight
DESCRIPTION:AB1185 Sheriff Oversight will be discussed at the AC BOS Public Protection meeting this Thursday\, May 19 at 10am.  It is the second agenda item. It’s a hybrid meeting so zoom participation is welcome\, including for public comment.\n\nOpponents of oversight – some clearly influenced by the Oathkeepers’ movement promoting the ultimate authority of sheriff’s over state and county laws – have started to show up. We need maximum participation in support of the principles of effective oversight identified by the coalition initiated by Faith In Action East Bay and the Coalition for Police with strong support from League of Women Voters.\n\nFYI I’m attaching the recent op-ed in Oakland Post which lays out the key issues – with the biggest sticking points apparently still legal counsel for oversight completely independent of county counsel’s conflicts of interest and an open and transparent selection panel process to identify diverse and representative oversight nominees from throughout the county\, rather than direct appointment by supervisors.\n\nInformation below – along with the Public Protection Committee members email addresses:\n\nrichard.valle@acgov.org\n\nnate.miley@acgov.org\n\n\n\n\nALAMEDA COUNTY\nBOARD OF SUPERVISORS’\nPUBLIC PROTECTION COMMITTEE\nThursday\, May 19\, 2022\n10:00 a.m.\nSupervisor Richard Valle\, Chair\nSupervisor Nate Miley\nLocation: Board of Supervisors Chambers\, 5 th floor\nCounty Administration Building\n1221 Oak Street\, Oakland\, CA 94612\nWebinar: https://zoom.us/j/83246519903\nPhone: (877) 853 – 5257\nWebinar ID: 832 4651 9903\n\nPublic Protection\nAGENDA

SUMMARY:AC Sheriff Oversight Public Protection Committee
DESCRIPTION:Alameda County needs oversight of our Sheriff! AC BOS Public Protection Committee – Thursday\, April 28\, 10:00am\nAnother Death in the Jail – East Bay Times Article \n“At least 58 People Have Died In Santa Rita Jail Since 2014!” Demand Investigations and Civilian Oversight of the Sheriff ! \n\n\n\n\nThose we trust to keep our community and all of its members safe must answer when they fail to do so. Ongoing oversight is good government. \nThe US Justice Department recently found conditions in the Alameda county jail violate constitutional rights and subject the 40% in custody who need mental health services to “unlawful harm.” Law suits are costing the county millions. Our county sheriff’s department needs a major transformation and ongoing oversight. \nAssembly Bill 1185 provides for a community-based Oversight Board and an Inspector General with subpoena power to help supervise sheriff’s departments and jails. This is an opportunity for our community to gain accountability over an extremely problematic and costly county service. \nCommunity Advocates have a plan. \n\n\n\n\nWe Need Strong Oversight of Sheriff With Investigative Staff & Subpoena Power \nThe AC Board of Supervisors Public Protection Committee Will Be Hearing the Consultant’s Report on an Ordinance For a Community Sheriff’s Oversight Board & Office of Inspector General With Supoena Power pursuant to the 2020 Assembly Bill 1185. Thurs.4/28 – 10am. Translation services will be available for this meeting. \nOpponents of oversight who support the Sheriff are showing up – Make Your Voice Heard !!! Zoom information coming – Calendar this meeting 4/28\,10am to comment. Email Board: cbs@acgov.org Community Advocates Draft Ordinance: https://bit.ly/1185ORD \nAdditional Information and a shareable link with meeting information & suggestions for supporting independent\, strong & representative oversight: https://bit.ly/SheriffOversightInformation
