SUMMARY:Conflict Resolution Training ~ A Becoming Event
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a shared experience of growing our capacity to be effective leaders and organizers. Join us at 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday\, January 27 on Zoom for conflict resolution training with Wester Justice Center’s Arturo Magaña. In this 90-minute session\, you are going to learn skills and tools to become a better organizer and better person. \nWhen we are doing advocacy we can sometimes become very narrow minded. Learn about having two-way conversations while advocating for your own position. Learn how to connect and build empathy\, convey emotion well\, be an active listener\, and collaborate with and activate change with one another. \nArturo Magaña is the Conflict Resolution Education Programs Coordinator at Western Justice Center. He has over 10 years working in public schools in Los Angeles County\, assisting after school programs\, community school systems\, and guidance and support for foster youth. He served as the Co-Chair for the Institute for Educational Leadership’s Coordinators’ Network\, where he worked alongside other Community School Coordinators across the country and Canada on educational equity initiatives. He has a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Westwood College\, a Master’s in Guidance Counseling from Loyola Marymount University\, and a Masters of Public Administration at CSU Long Beach. \nSpanish translation will be provided. SUMMARY:ZOOM TOWN HALL FOR  OVERSIGHT OF THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE/AB1185 IMPLEMENTATION
DESCRIPTION:ZOOM TOWN HALL FOR  \nOVERSIGHT OF THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE/AB1185 IMPLEMENTATION \n  \nWEDNESDAY\, DECEMBER 15TH\, 6-8 PM \nDISTRICTS 3 & 4\, SUPERVISORS MILEY AND  \nBROWN (SUPERVISOR CHAN’S INTERIM SUCCESSOR.) \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/community-engagement-meeting-on-ab-1185sheriff-oversight-district-3-4-tickets-214190097347 \n  \nTHESE ARE CRITICAL MEETINGS FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TOWARD DEVELOPING THE STRONGEST\, MOST EFFECTIVE OVERSIGHT OF THE SHERIFF AND JAIL POSSIBLE UNDER THE LAW.  COME & BRING FRIENDS \nALL ARE WELCOME TO ANY MEETING\, BUT PARTICIPATION IN YOUR DISTRICT MEANS YOUR VOICE WILL BE MOST EFFECTIVE. \n  \nINFORMATION BELOW FOR PUBLIC COMMENT BASED ON OUR ADVOCATES COALITION LETTER TO SUPERVISORS\,  LINKED HERE: https://bit.ly/AB1185letter \nNext Page \n  \nThe strongest oversight model under the new state law\, AB1185\, will have certain limitations as the sheriff is an elected official. But with subpoena power they can conduct independent investigations and recommend substantive change to the Board of Supervisors.   \n  \nCounty supervisors\, under California Government Code\, have authority to “supervise the official conduct of all county officers\, including the sheriff” and “shall see that (county officers) faithfully perform their duties.” Supervisors cannot interfere with investigative functions\, but all other sheriff’s duties are subject to a Board of Supervisors (BOS) oversight. \n  \nStructured\, community-based oversight can focus on problems within the department and objectively consider ways of improving policies and programs in the jail to reduce recidivism\, uphold constitutional policing and help the county save money by preemptively avoiding practices like those currently resulting in civil suits and federal interventions.   \nKey principles we are advocating for strong and effective community oversight that can be upheld in Public Comments:  \n\nA volunteer oversight board composed of qualified community members\, fully representative of Alameda County’s regional and demographic diversity – including voices of those most impacted by sheriff’s department operations – working with a full-time Inspector General\, both with subpoena power.\n\n\nIndirect oversight board appointments\, via a community selection panel appointed by the Supervisors and mandated to reach out in a transparent and non-political application process\, to select the most qualified\, diverse and inclusive oversight board nominees among county residents. \n\n\nLegal counsel to an oversight board and inspector general that is fully independent of the County Counsel’s potential conflicts of interest representing the sheriff and county in civil lawsuits.\n\n\nA dedicated funding stream for adequate staffing of investigators and other essential full-time personnel.\n\n\nFull and timely access to all relevant records and testimony\, and regular public meetings\, town halls & reports to address issues of concern to the community and the Board of Supervisors (BOS.)\n\nWhat are sheriff’s duties and powers under state law and the Alameda County Charter ? \nThe sheriff is an elected official. The current Alameda County Sheriff is Greg Ahern. He has held this position since 2007 and has run uncontested for three consecutive election cycles. SUMMARY:Town Hall on OPD Culture
DESCRIPTION:HOW CAN POLICE CULTURE BE CHANGED? \nNorm Stamper (former San Diego & Seattle police chief and author of policing books)*and John Jones III** (advocate\, activist\, Oaklander) will lead a community discussion on how (and if) we can organize to end racist\, sexist\, anti-reform culture from OPD. \nZoom Town Hall on OPD culture \nTues\, Nov 16; 7 – 8:30pm \n~~~ \nREGISTER: \nhttps://bit.ly/OPDCULTURE \n*Former San Diego and Seattle Police Chief Norm Stamper has written two books on policing in America: Breaking Rank and To Protect and Serve: How to Fix America’s Police. In these books\, Norm Stamper introduces us to the violent\, secret world of domestic abuse that cops must not only navigate\, but which some also perpetrate. Former chief of the Seattle police force\, Stamper goes on to expose a troubling culture of racism\, sexism\, and homophobia that is still pervasive within the twenty-first-century force; then he explores how such prejudices can be addressed. \n**John Jones III is a well known and respected community activist\, formerly incarcerated\, who has served the Oakland community in many capacities including being a member of the Selection Panel that chose many of our Police Commissioners and serving on the Reimagining Public Safety Task Force. He is also a member of the Neighborhood Opportunities and Accountability Board (NOAB) which is a diversion program that serves juveniles and offers an opportunity to prevent them from having an arrest record. He is currently working with Building Opportunities for Self Sufficiency (BOSS) and is a member of the Coalition for Police Accountability.
