Yet another in-custody death has taken place at the hands of Santa Rita Jail.
On May 17th, Jose “Nick” Piña was taken into Santa Rita Jail custody, that very same date shortly after arriving at the jail, deputies used force and restraints on Nick — within just hours of arriving at the jail Nick was transported to the hospital and later pronounced deceased on June 7th.
Nick’s mom, Lydia, was never told that her son was at the hospital and only learned 9 days after he had already been hospitalized. To date, she has received no information from ACSO regarding what happened to her son. We are also very concerned that the jail is not considering this an in-custody death.
This is now at least the 59th in custody death that we are aware of since 2014, and at least the 2nd one that has taken place since the controversial ‘consent decree’ went into effect.
Please join Lydia and other impacted families for a community vigil and action in front of the sheriff’s office tomorrow , Wed 6/22 @ 4p.m
