Helen Hutchison is a past president and active member of the League of Women Voters of Oakland. She has been a League member since 1969 in a number of communities around the country. She is a past President of the League of Women Voters of California and current member of the LWVC board. Professionally Helen is a retired computer systems analyst. She is an active member of Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland, and a foster care volunteer with the East Bay SPCA.
Rev. Dr. Malik JoDavid Sales is a native of Huntsville, AL and a product of St. John AME Church. While attending Xavier University of Louisiana, he accepted his call into the ministry. He graduated Magna cum Laude from Xavier with a B.A. in Theology. After undergrad, Rev. Sales attended Harvard Divinity School, where he earned a Master of Theological Studies. Finally, he concluded his educational preparation at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA, where he earned his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology in 2012. His dissertation, Saving Possibilities, offered a contemporary perspective on salvation, evil, and the Holy Spirit by uniting the insights of various liberation theologies and performance theory. An eighteen-song album entitled, The Infinite Struggle [Can’t Won’t Don’t Stop], which was written, performed, and recorded by Dr. Sales, accompanied his dissertation. Rev. Sales is the proud pastor of Brookins AME Church, Oakland CA. Additionally, Dr. Sales teaches in the Theology and Religious Studies Department of St. Mary’s College in Moraga, CA, He also serves as the CA Conference Co-Director of Christian Education and President of the CA Conference Ministerial Alliance. Since graduating, Dr. Sales has published a novel, loves to blog on www.scifitheologian.com, and continues to write and release music under the artist name “Jolowmight x Cervantes.” He is married to his college sweetheart, Dr. Keedra Sales, and they have two daughters, aka “The Blossom Sisters.” In all things, Rev. Sales tries to live his life by remembering the words of Jesus in Matthew 25 and the words of 1 John 4:20. “As surely as you did it to the least of these, you did it it also unto me,” and “Those who say ‘I love God’ and hate a brother or sister are liars. For those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.”
