Reimagining Beloved Community

The recent years have been charged with political, racial, socio-economic tensions. Now with the 2024 presidential campaign ahead and our democracy under assault, we must be proactive in nurturing the shared values and bonds of our communities. Join a conversation on what it means to reimagine the Beloved Community for the nation in this new era. Rev. Adam Russell Taylor, president of Sojourners and author of A More Perfect Union: A New Vision for Building the Beloved Community, will lead a panel of local faith leaders: Rev. Leslie Takahashi, Pastor Michael Wallace, Rabbi Julie Saxe-Taller.

BIOS

Rev. Adam Russell Taylor is president of Sojourners and author of A More Perfect Union: A New Vision for Building the Beloved Community. Taylor previously led the Faith Initiative at the World Bank Group, served as the vice president in charge of Advocacy at World Vision U.S., and co-founded Global Justice. He was selected for the 2009/2010 class of White House Fellows. Taylor is a graduate of Emory University, the Harvard U. Kennedy School of Government, and the Proctor School of Theology. Taylor is on the Independent Sector Board and serves in ministry at the Alfred Street Baptist Church.

Leslie Takahashi serves as lead minister at the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church in Walnut Creek, CA and has served as faculty at both the Unitarian Unviersalist theological schools. She has led within Unitarian Universalism in the areas of anti-oppression, justice and trauma integration. Prior to entering the ministry, she worked professionally in the area of leadership development, sustainable economic development and education policy and was the Assistant Vice President for Policy for the North Carolina Community College System. She is the co-author, with Chip Roush and Leon Spencer, of The Arc of The Universe is Long: Anti-racism and the Unitarian Universalist Association (Skinner House 2008)and a contributor to a number of professional publications and meditation collections. Her children, Garner and Liam–and now grandson, OT, offer on-going inspiration.

Rabbi Julie Saxe-Taller is the Lead Organizer for the California Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC-CA), where she builds the network of congregations who are harnessing their statewide voice for justice as Jews. Previously, she served Congregation Sherith Israel in San Francisco from 2004 to 2017. Rabbi Saxe-Taller is passionate about bringing the spiritual, creative and justice-seeking elements of Judaism together, as they are meant to be.

Pastor Michael Wallace is the Board Co-Chair and Faith in Action East Bay and Senior Pastor-Teacher at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church.
