Title:
Tisha B’Av 5782 – Community Loss and the Injustice of Incarceration: Mourning the Deaths in Alameda County’s Santa Rita Jail
Description:
On this Tisha B’Av, as we grieve our communal losses across time, we are called to mourn the 64 known deaths that have occurred in Santa Rita Jail since 2014, a number that is equivalent to one death every 6 1/2 weeks. These lives lost belong primarily to our Black and brown siblings who make up a majority of people incarcerated at Santa Rita. Whether alleged suicide, homicide or jailer neglect, we mourn the cruelty and indifference that leads to this unnecessary loss of life. Incarceration in Santa Rita Jail should never be a death sentence.
This observance will be in-person, outdoors, and will include:
All are welcome to come for all or part of this observance.
On Tisha B’Av it is customary to sit on the floor or a low chair. You may want to bring a mat or low chair to sit on. Folding chairs will also be available.
