ICE unlawfully detained and brutalized an undocumented community member.
ICE violently and unlawfully arrested Ulises yesterday morning, as he was about to leave for work, resulting in his emergency hospitalization. Ulises invoked his rights to remain silent, to speak with a lawyer, and to stay in his vehicle unless ICE produced a warrant. Rather than respecting his rights and ending the encounter, ICE officers verbally abused Ulises, smashed in his car window with a baton, and violently dragged him out of his car. These actions by ICE represent serious constitutional violations.
Ulises has a number of serious health conditions, including a blood clot in his neck, a heart condition, a spinal disorder, and knee injuries. Due to the traumatic and violent arrest, Ulises collapsed and struggled to breathe. Paramedics ultimately rushed him to the emergency room.
Once he got to the hospital, ICE continued to violate Ulises’ rights. Ulises was not permitted to speak with his attorney for around 6 hours, and even then refused to provide a confidential space to speak with his attorney. Ulises remained shackled to his hospital bed, was denied access to his medications, food, and water, and was not permitted to call his family. His wife and brother rushed to the hospital, but were not allowed to see Ulises. Ulises has been admitted overnight, and ICE has stated that they plan to detain him as soon as he is medically cleared.
Ulises has lived in the U.S. for well over a decade and is the sole economic provider for his U.S. citizen wife and their 3-year-old daughter. Ulises deserves to be with his family so that they can heal together from the trauma of ICE’s unjust and abusive conduct, and so that Ulises can continue to receive the medical care he needs for his. LET ULISES RETURN HOME!

ICE’s message to the community: If you assert your rights, we’ll put you in the hospital. Our response to ICE: We won’t allow you to brutalize, intimidate, and cage our communities with impunity! Join us in demanding that ICE release Ulises!
