Make Your Voice Heard at the Alameda County Redistricting Meeting at 5 p.m. Monday, December 13
The distribution of the districts at the state, county, and city level passes every 10 years (based on the information from the 2020 census).
New boundaries are set that determine the new school districts and council districts in Oakland. Our concerns are:
- establish the boundaries of the districts without prejudice or discrimination
- ensure equal representation for all Oakland residents
- ensure that resources for schools and for the good of the community stay within the community
- help the community to have political power in elections, local policies and laws, as well as choosing leaders who represent the interests of the community
- the entire community can participate regardless of their immigration status or whether they can vote or not.
Process to draw the new map in the district:
- They choose commissioners-volunteers who represent their community.
- The community can participate in meetings where they can give their opinion.
- The commissioner has until December 31 to make a decision and create the map tracing the new lines of the district.
Next commission meeting is 5 p.m. on Monday, December 13, 2021.
There is also a Redistricting Commission Special Meeting at 5 p.m. Thursday, December 30.
Let your voice be heard. Share your concerns and questions during Public Comment at the next meeting. We still have time to be heard to be included. Take a look at the interactive maps. There you can see the latest maps the commission will vote on.
