Oakland, Calif. — Thanks to the work of the Faith in Action Illegal Dumping Local Organizing Committee and Block by Block Organizing, Oakland Public Works is bringing back the Bulky Block Party, an event where Oakland residents can attend to conveniently dispose unwanted large household items for free. This is an effort to further address illegal dumping.
Bulky Block Parties are scheduled quarterly for the following Saturdays. All events will take place at 7101 Edgewater Dr., Oakland, CA 94621 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- July 25, 2026
- October 24, 2026
- January 23, 2027
- April 24, 2027
The events are open to Oakland residents only. Participants must bring proof of Oakland residency. That includes a current piece of mail showing the participant’s name and residential address such as garbage bill, utility bill, bank statement or other official mail with a current postmark, along with a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or state ID. Businesses are not eligible to participate.
“Every illegally dumped mattress, couch, or appliance is something that could have been disposed of properly,” said Mayor Barbara Lee. “Oakland’s Bulky Block Parties give residents another free, convenient option to keep these items out of our neighborhoods and demonstrates our continued commitment to making Oakland the cleanest, safest and greenest!”
“The Bulky Block Party is one of the many steps the City of Oakland is taking to tackle illegal dumping,” said Liam Garland, Director of Oakland Public Works. “By providing residents with more disposal options, we’re getting more unwanted items off our streets. These events also provide an opportunity to connect people with year-round services that are already available to them.”
Residents may bring a variety of bulky household items including:
- Furniture
- Mattresses and box springs
- Appliances
- Electronics
- Household items
Construction debris, hazardous materials, green waste, and commercial waste will not be accepted. Call (510) 238-7283 (238-SAVE) or emailrecycling@oaklandca.gov if you have further questions about accepted and prohibited items.
The Bulky Block Party complements Oakland’s other existing programs that let residents schedule a free Bulky Items Curbside Pickup and a free Bulky Items Drop Off every year. Visit oaklandrecycles.com/bulky to learn more about these programs.
Bulky Curbside Pickup
Oakland residents can call 1-888-WM-BULKY or request an appointment online to have bulky items picked up from their curb. Residents are entitled to at least one free pickup every year. Renters can schedule directly and do not have to schedule through their landlord.
For single-family homes only, a second curbside pickup is available annually at no additional cost 45 days after the use of one bulky drop off and one curbside pickup.
Bulky Drop Off
Residents can schedule a one-time drop off of up to four cubic yards of bulky waste at the Davis Street Resource Recovery Complex in San Leandro.
Call 1-888-WM-BULKY or request an appointment online.
Oakland Public Works encourages residents to take advantage of these free disposal options rather than leaving unwanted items on streets or sidewalks, where they create safety hazards, contribute to neighborhood blight and require City crews to divert resources from other essential services.
Together, the Bulky Block Party and other year-round programs make it easier than ever for residents to dispose of bulky items responsibly and help keep Oakland clean.
