This year, we brought our prayers, stories, and prophetic voices to the halls of power in the Capitol and together, we advanced policies rooted in the simple belief that every family is sacred, every person deserves dignity, and our public dollars should serve our communities – not separation, detention, or injustice.
We were victorious and three key pieces of legislation are on their way to Governor Newsom’s desk to be signed into law:
The No Taxpayer Dollars for Family Separation Act (AB2465) which will stop corporations who profit from private detention and immigration enforcement from receiving state grants, loans, and tax credits.
The Truth in Disclosure Act (AB 2599) which will require large corporations to disclose their historical involvement in slavery-related transactions – an essential step toward truth, accountability, and repair for Black families and communities.
The HUGs Act (AB 1646) which protects consensual hugs and hand-holding during visits for young people in juvenile facilities – because family connection is sacred and essential to healing.
At a time when the world has felt dark and hopeless, we are making progress toward justice!
Here are two things you, as a person of faith and conviction, can do right now to help us keep up the momentum:
Tell Governor Newsom to sign these bills into law. There’s no time to waste. It takes 30 seconds to add your name. We know that these letters impact the likelihood that a bill becomes a law – so speak up.
